Medical License Online Resources

Medical licensing requirements are governed by each state and by a collection of national boards and associations. Here are some resources you can use to become more familiar with the licensing process. Doctors Licensure Group can make it easy for you.

The United States Medical Licensing Examination

The United States Medical Licensing Examination ® (USMLE®) is a three-step examination for medical licensure in the United States and is sponsored by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners® (NBME®). The USMLE assesses a physician's ability to apply knowledge, concepts, and principles, and to demonstrate fundamental patient-centered skills, that are important in health and disease and that constitute the basis of safe and effective patient care. Each of the three Steps of the USMLE complements the others; no Step can stand alone in the assessment of readiness for medical licensure.

Federation of State Medical Boards

The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) is a national non-profit organization representing the 70 medical and osteopathic boards of the United States and its territories. The FSMB leads by promoting excellence in medical practice, licensure, and regulation as the national resource and voice on behalf of state medical and osteopathic boards in their protection of the public.

National Board of Medical Examiners® (NBME®)

Founded in 1915, the National Board of Medical Examiners® (NBME®) is an independent, not-for-profit organization that serves the public through its high- quality assessments of healthcare professionals.

Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is a private professional organization responsible for the accreditation of about 9,200 residency education programs. Residency education is the period of clinical education in a medical specialty that follows graduation from medical school, and prepares physicians for the independent practice of medicine.

Drug Enforcement Administration

The mission of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is to enforce the controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States and bring to the criminal and civil justice system of the United States, or any other competent jurisdiction, those organizations and principal members of organizations, involved in the growing, manufacture, or distribution of controlled substances appearing in or destined for illicit traffic in the United States; and to recommend and support non-enforcement programs aimed at reducing the availability of illicit controlled substances on the domestic and international markets.

National Practitioner Data Bank

The National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB), or "the Data Bank," is a confidential information clearinghouse created by Congress with the primary goals of improving health care quality, protecting the public, and reducing health care fraud and abuse in the U.S.
